A prospectus for UK marine sustained observations.

چکیده
It takes a certain type of scientist to have the forethought and motivation to initiate a series of repeat measurements that may not show significant change throughout their lifetime. However, it is such records that we must turn to if we are to make informed decisions regarding long-acting issues such as the impact of climate change on human habitation, food supplies and ecosystem health. The UK has a strong history of such sustained observations and part of the motivation for this publication is to celebrate this fact. However, much more important is to gauge the continuing interest from the marine science community in instigating, maintaining and funding such measurements that inherently demand long-term financial and scientific commitment. On 17 September 2013, a one-day meeting, organized by the Challenger Society for Marine Science and the UK Scientific Committee for Oceanic Research, was held at the Royal Society, London, to give the UK marine science community an opportunity to discuss sustained marine observations in an open forum. Seven early/mid-career scientists from a range of marine science backgrounds presented their perspectives on the subject with an introduction and international perspective provided by established scientists. Comments following each talk indicated high levels of scientific and applied interest in the long-term measurements being scrutinized. The meeting was followed by a panel-led discussion session where the panel members addressed questions posed by the audience. This theme issue contains seven papers arising from the talks presented at the meeting with each paper

The role of sustained observations in tracking impacts of environmental change on marine biodiversity and ecosystems.
Marine biodiversity currently faces unprecedented threats from multiple pressures arising from human activities. Global drivers such as climate change and ocean acidification interact with regional eutrophication, exploitation of commercial fish stocks and localized pressures including pollution, coastal development and the extraction of aggregates and fuel, causing alteration and degradation o...
متن کاملChanging currents: a strategy for understanding and predicting the changing ocean circulation.
Within the context of UK marine science, we project a strategy for ocean circulation research over the next 20 years. We recommend a focus on three types of research: (i) sustained observations of the varying and evolving ocean circulation, (ii) careful analysis and interpretation of the observed climate changes for comparison with climate model projections, and (iii) the design and execution o...

The traditional event tree analysis uses a single probability to represent each top event. However, it is unrealistic to evaluate the occurrence of each event by using a crisp value without considering the inherent uncertainty and imprecision a state has. The fuzzy set theory is universally applied to deal with this kind of phenomena. The main purpose of this study is to construct an easy metho...
متن کاملApplication of Fuzzy Fault Tree Analysis on Oil and Gas Offshore Pipelines
Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) as a Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) method is used to identify basic causes leading to an undesired event, to represent logical relation of these basic causes in leading to the event, and finally to calculate the probability of occurrence of this event. To conduct a quantitative FTA, one needs a fault tree along with failure data of the Basic Events (BEs). Someti...
متن کاملGravity acceleration at the sea surface derived from satellite altimetry data using harmonic splines
Gravity acceleration data have grand pursuit for marine applications. Due to environmental effects, marine gravity observations always hold a high noise level. In this paper, we propose an approach to produce marine gravity data using satellite altimetry, high-resolution geopotential models and harmonic splines. On the one hand, harmonic spline functions have great capability for local gravity ...
